behind the sweetness
The Flourist is a boutique cake studio specializing in bespoke cakes, desserts and breads operating in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Founded by Pastry Chef Saria Saguaro Ahmed in February 2013 as an online business, we are currently on our 11th year.
THE START
Saria wanted to be a lot of things growing up but a chef wasn’t one of them. So why culinary school?
While on vacation in Singapore in 2011, Saria, a journalist-turned-advertising-professional was looking to shed some extra fluff. She decided to have one dessert a week and she spent the entire week planning out where she would eat her prized dessert on her cheat day.
Come cheat day, Saria went to the café in question and ordered the rich, dense slice of chocolate cake she had been eyeing all week. After waiting a week for her first sugary bite she was disappointed! The piece of cake was stale, dry and the opposite of delicious. She complained about this piece of cake to her companions – Banyan and Bau.
So much so that Bau gently suggested she apply for culinary school in the UK instead of her pursing higher studies in her field. With the seed planted, the idea stewed in her mind and by the time vacation was over, she stopped applying for her Masters and started researching culinary schools!
Thus started her culinary journey! Saria attended the prestigious French school, Le Cordon Bleu, London, and graduated with a Diploma in Patisserie in 2012.
